April 6 & 7, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday

Thursday night’s service will be live streamed at 7:30pm. The name “Maundy Thursday” comes from the Latin mandatum, for “command,” as we remember Jesus’ command to his disciples in the Upper Room that they love one another as he has loved them. In this service we also commemorate the institution of Holy Communion, offer individual laying on of hands for forgiveness, and have a symbolic foot washing ceremony. You are encouraged to watch through to the end of this service, as it concludes with the stripping of the altar, symbolic of Christ’s humiliation during his arrest and trial.

Good Friday’s service, also live streamed at 7:30pm, includes brief reflections on the “Seven Last Words” of Jesus from the cross, preached by a number of different pastors.

The recordings of the live streams for both services will remain available on YouTube, but will not be re-posted on Facebook or this web page.

After the service, we invite you to fill out an online response card here. Also, if you are able, we invite you to partner with us by financially supporting Reformation here. Your generosity allows us to bring the hope of Jesus to Milford and beyond. Thank you!

Palm Sunday (also "the Sunday of the Passion") carries bad news about us and good news for us. The chilling words of the crowds calling for Christ's crucifixion, "His blood be on us and on our children," carry depths of meaning. In this sermon on the Passion (or "suffering") of Christ, Pastor Eric invites us to contemplate the deep mystery of Christ's sacrifice for us.

This is a challenging passage. John 11:1-45 tells the amazing story of Lazarus being raised from the dead, an incredibly hopeful account of Jesus' power to raise the dead. But there is a difficult side to it as well. Jesus did not respond immediately when he heard that Lazarus was ill, and so before Jesus came, Lazarus had died. "If you had been here," Lazarus' sisters say, "my brother would not have died." But what if the role of Jesus isn't to keep his people protected from feeling hurt or pain? What if, in fact, he can lead us through the worst we could ever face and give us the gift of new life on the other side? This sermon from Pastor Eric invites you to let Jesus lead you, even into places we might not want to go.

As we continue our journey through the season of Lent, we come to a rich story from John 9:1-41 about Jesus healing a man who was born blind. Even though this is an amazing miracle, it was not well received by the man’s community or by the religious leaders. Instead of celebrating the healed man’s new gift of sight, those around him interrogate him and demand to know how Jesus did it. In this sermon, Pastor Paige contrasts the man’s miraculous gift of sight with the blindness of those who refuse to see God’s healing power at work through his Son. She asks listeners to consider how God has healed them in the past, or how they are currently waiting for God to act. By hearing this gospel story in a worship service, surrounded by other believers, we are strengthened in our faith and able to more fully trust that we will experience the healing power of God in our lives, in God’s own time.

We get to overhear a long conversation between Jesus and the woman at the well today. At first, she thinks they’re talking about the mundane chore of drawing water. But as the reading from John 4:5-42 continues, we hear how Jesus opens up the woman’s eyes and heart to the living water and the new future he offers her and everyone he invites to follow him. Pastor Paige explores this rich story in today’s sermon. She asks worshipers to pause in the middle of Lent, consider what their souls are thirsty for, and turn to Jesus to find the true satisfaction, abundant life, and eternal life he alone can give.

In John 3:1-17, Jesus teaches about being "born again" or "born from above." We often get caught up in wondering what being "born again" means, but we lose sight of the fact that after we are born, the point is to grow up! In this sermon, Pastor Eric uses the story of a failed railway project in Spain to call us to consider the ways we might be resisting the new life Jesus wants to give us. It is a challenging call, but it is also the summons into the life God desires to give us.

Why are we here? Genesis 2:15 gives us an answer: we are meant to be gardeners. Now, that's a metaphor. Gardeners take the world around them and work to make it more productive or beautiful. We were created to help the creation around us -including other people!- thrive and grow in glory. But our sin has disconnected us from this high and holy calling. In Matthew 4:1-11, we hear the story of how Jesus overcomes temptation to restore us to our deepest meaning. Pastor Eric helps us see that through a pilgrimage in the desert, we can rediscover the purpose of the Garden.

When we’re used to rushing around and always looking ahead to the next event on our calendars, it can be challenging to pause and soak up the good things that are happening in our lives. In worship today, we are celebrating the Transfiguration of Our Lord. This was the moment on a mountaintop when Jesus suddenly started shining like the sun. God spoke from a cloud, surprising the disciples who witnessed it so much that they fell down in fear. In this sermon on the story of Jesus’ Transfiguration from Matthew 17:1-9, Pastor Paige encourages listeners to pause, celebrate, and truly take in Jesus’ glory. By letting Jesus’ light shine on us, we receive fuel for the journey of Lent which is about to begin.

In Matthew 5:21-37, Jesus takes the words of the Old Testament Law and radically sharpens them. Instead of outward obedience, he demands inner purity. But what if this is beyond our power? In this sermon, Pastor Eric uses the image of a coach vs. a surgeon to understand how these words of Jesus work in our souls, and how we can find freedom and joy in the love of Christ.

Sometimes in worship, we hear “church words” that have been nearly forgotten in our modern world. Taking a word from all of today’s lessons, and particularly from the gospel reading from Matthew 5:13-20, Pastor Paige invites listeners to learn about the word, “righteousness.” What does it mean that we are clothed in Jesus’ righteousness? Do we need to worry about our measure of righteousness? What does righteousness have to do with how we live each day as followers of Jesus? In this sermon, we consider these questions so we can learn how to obey God’s call to practice righteousness and shine the light of Christ as we serve our neighbors.

In today's readings (Micah 6:1-8, 1Corinthians 1:18-31, and Matthew 5:1-12, we hear God's call to his people to live in holiness and service. It's a call that can feel impossible. But what if it wasn't up to us? What if God does want to transform us, and change the world through us, but if it wasn't our strength or wisdom that would get it done? In this sermon, Pastor Eric lifts up the grace of Jesus in the Cross as the source of all spiritual good and power. When we trust in him, and not our own efforts, then God's saving purposes will get done.

As the season of Epiphany continues, we hear the good news that Jesus brings light to scatter the darkness. Today’s gospel reading from Matthew 4:12-23 invites us to follow Jesus as his disciples. In this sermon, Pastor Paige points out that it isn’t always easy to do that, given the challenges of sin and the unexpected ways that darkness tries to sneak into our lives. By becoming human for us and our salvation, Jesus knows what that feels like. In his death on the cross and his resurrection, the light and power of God overcame the darkness once and for all, for us and for the whole world. Now we get to shine the light of our risen Lord everywhere we go.

A lot of Christians, especially those invested in their churches, are vulnerable to frustration and disappointment now. Trends of lower participation, and of more people identifying as non-Christian, had been going on for decades, and the pandemic & lockdowns only accelerated them. The temptation is to say that "the world should change so they can come to us." But what if the Lord wants us to change so that we go to the world? What if caring about the well-being of the institution, and those already in it, is too small a hope? In this sermon from Isaiah 49:1-7, Pastor Eric uses the image of the Dead Sea to lift up God's call to mission for the sake of others.

January 8, 2023 Worship! (The Baptism of Our Lord, with a little Epiphany!)

We are so glad you’re joining Reformation for online worship! We hope that this time of prayer, song, and hearing the Word of God will help you to go deeper in your relationship with Jesus and grow in your love and service. The button above will allow you to download a bulletin to help follow along in the service. Our daily devotions guide is still “on hiatus,” but will come back soon. On January 8, we are celebrating both the festival of The Epiphany as well as The Baptism of Our Lord.

So much of what people do boils down to pursuing feelings of worthiness, belonging, and acceptance. And no matter how hard we work for it, we are often left disappointed or disillusioned. But the story of Jesus' baptism offers us a different way. What if, instead of spending our lives working for acceptance, we could live our lives FROM the gift of acceptance by God? In this sermon from Matthew 3:13-17, Pastor Eric invites us to see how Christ's baptism reveals what happens in our own baptisms, and how that can empower us to live transformed, healed, and holy lives.
