With today’s service, we begin our annual stewardship focus. In a season of contention and strife, we may be tempted, as individuals and as a congregation, to shrink back, be quiet, and keep our faith to ourselves. This was the situation both the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk and the New Testament leader Timothy faced. But in challenging times, they were encouraged to step out boldly in faith, not as “culture warriors,” but as courageous witnesses to the saving power of Jesus. In this sermon, Pastor Eric challenges us to rekindle that kind of faith in our lives, so that we can not only receive, but also share, all the saving love and power Jesus has given us.

The parable for today from Luke 16:19-31 is vivid and powerful. There are two men on opposite sides of a chasm. One is wrapped in the love and security of our ancestor in the faith, Abraham. The other is in torment. Their positions in the parable are the exact opposite of what they experienced in life. Pastor Paige connects this parable to another part of our worship service, Confession & Forgiveness. She asks listeners to consider what actions they are leaving “undone” and what chasms have started forming in their lives as a result. On the other hand, she asks what they could accomplish, for the sake of our neighbors, if they tapped into the love and grace that Jesus freely gives us.

“All religions are really the same.” “They’re all just different paths up the same mountain.” Is that really the case? In our reading from 1Timothy 2:1-7, the Apostle Paul claims there is “one God” and “one mediator between God and humanity.” Why does this seem so out of place in our culture? Can it really be good news? In this sermon, Pastor Eric will encourage us to trust this one, unique, particular Savior, who is the one who gave himself “for all.”

However close you feel to Jesus today, or how far, the truth is that Jesus is always seeking after you. You are God’s beloved child. In our gospel reading from Luke 15:1-10, Jesus tells two parables that show how wide his welcome and his mercy are toward everyone. Not only does Jesus welcome sinners, he also promises that when sinners repent, heaven throws a party! In this sermon, Pastor Paige invites hearers to open their eyes to the wideness of God’s mercy and the ways we are called to share God’s mercy and love with others.

The book of Philemon is incredibly short (we will hear most if it as today’s second reading!) and incredibly “passive aggressive.” Why? The Apostle Paul is giving Philemon some very challenging instructions, and we can tell he is trying to make sure Philemon gets the hint. This command-that-isn’t-phrased-as-a-command from Paul is a living example of what Jesus talks about in our Gospel reading, the need to “count the cost” and the fact that following him will always lead us to the place of decision and sacrifice. Pastor Eric will challenge us: What sacrifice are you facing? What is the cost? A faith that has no cost will not lead us to the place where Jesus calls us to be.

“We have no abiding city,” Hebrews tells us. This is a way of telling us that when we try to create our own way of life, apart from God, seeking our own security and comfort, usually at the expense of others, it is doomed to failure. In our readings from Hebrews and Luke, we find invitations to a new way of life, one that will abide forever because it is created by the death-defeating grace of Jesus. Pastor Eric challenges us to live by the rules of this city, and find a life of hope, truth, and joy that can only be enjoyed when it is shared with others.

In today's gospel reading, Luke 13:10-17, Jesus heals a woman in the synagogue. Everyone witnessing this healing is surprised, not to mention the woman herself. In this sermon, Pastor Paige shows listeners how Jesus’ not only healed her physically, but he also changed her perspective. He does the same with the religious leaders who opposed him for healing someone on the Sabbath. How is Jesus calling you to expand, change, or heal your perspective on your life, your faith, your relationships, your community, or the world?

In today's gospel reading, Luke 12:49-56, Jesus challenges us to examine our commitment to being his disciples. In this sermon, Pastor Paige unpacks his words. Pastor Paige reminds listeners to hear Jesus' call to devote our lives to him in light of the commitment he first made to us, through his cross.

Today's readings deal with "the rich" and "the greedy." But how do we define "rich" or "greedy?" Many people talk as if wealth and abundance themselves are evil. In today’s Gospel reading from Luke, Jesus sends out 70 workers to share the good news of the Kingdom of God, and to be laborers for God’s harvest. In this sermon, Pastor Paige asks listeners to imagine what it was like for the 70 to be guests as they traveled to the surrounding towns. They were also acting as hosts, as they brought the healing power of Jesus to the places they visited. How is Jesus calling you to receive his gifts, and also give them to others, in service and in sharing the good news of God’s love?

Today’s story from the Gospel of Luke is vivid and dramatic. Jesus heals a man possessed by many demons. In this sermon, Pastor Paige explores the ways the man’s life changed after his encounter with the Lord. The Book of Revelation pulls back the curtain on the heavenly realm. It gives us a vision of the heaven that God promises for us and for all who trust in our crucified and risen Lord. In today’s sermon on Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5, Pastor Paige explores how this heavenly vision relates to a joyful occasion in the life of our congregation: receiving 26 new members! This passage gives us a good idea of how to live and serve others in our present time, as followers of the risen Jesus. It also gives us hope for the future, when the holy city will descend from heaven and we will worship God up close. Taking time to imagine this glorious vision renews our faith, fills us with hope, and helps us celebrate the growth of our congregation with great joy.

During the Easter season, our first reading follows the Book of Acts and teaches us how the early Christians came to faith and formed a community. In today’s reading from Acts 11:1-18, Peter undergoes a change of heart about who is allowed to follow Jesus, thanks to a vision from God. Peter’s experience, and his new conviction that God’s mercy and love is for everyone, creates a wave of change in the early church. In this sermon, Pastor Paige asks listeners to think about aspects of their life and faith where unlearning could lead to more joy, and to a deeper understanding of God’s purpose for their lives.
