In this story from Luke 17:11-19, ten lepers are healed. One returns in gratitude and receives an additional blessing from Jesus. In this sermon, Pastor Eric invites us to consider, "do we come to God for what he can do for us, or simply because God is so good?" In other words, what's more important, the gift or the Giver? This message will help keep you from setting your sights too low.

The disciples make what seems like a simple request of Jesus in today’s gospel reading when they say, “Increase our faith!” But then Jesus helps them see that they’re focused on the wrong thing. It’s not the quantity of their faith that matters. It’s the quality of their faith, and the motivation for their faith, that Jesus wants them to examine. In this sermon on Luke 17:5-10, Pastor Paige asks listeners to think about the deeper reasons why they have faith in Jesus.

Money isn't evil. But money, and especially the ease, comfort, and sense of security it offers, can be spiritually deadly. In this sermon based on Luke 16:19-31 and Amos 6:1, 4-7, Pastor Eric shows how our attraction to money can cause us to miss the humanity of others, and even to lose some humanity of our own.

When you find yourself in a political conversation, or seeing political / cultural posts online, does your mind end up, in the words of St. Paul, "quiet and peaceable... in all godliness and dignity"? Probably not. And yet, how we govern our society matters. So how can we be engaged in civic life in a way that makes a positive impact without compromising our mental well-being or our spiritual integrity? In this sermon from 1Timothy 2:1-7, Pastor Eric looks at one possible reason why our cultural conversations are so emotionally fraught, and what remedy the Gospel might offer. But more than that, he encourages us to reconsider our commitment not only to our political party, but to the will and mission of Jesus Christ in this time and place.

When we think of Jesus’ parables about the lost being found, we usually think of the prodigal son. Today’s reading from Luke 15:1-10 focuses on two other parables that similarly convey the good news that God will stop at nothing to find his beloved children, even when they go astray. In this sermon, Pastor Paige highlights what it means for us to repent and turn back to God, and why there is so much rejoicing when God finds us and brings us home.

In Luke 14:25-33, it sure sounds like Jesus is ready to turn would-be followers away if they're not committed enough. But is that really what's happening? Pastor Eric invites us to reflect on Christ's commitment to us, our fears of putting God first, and why we need to be focused on Jesus is we are to do his work, his way, in the world.

Who are your good deeds good for? What is your goodness good for? What we often think of as "Christian morality" is quite different than what the Bible imagines. It's not all about us being good for our own eternal benefit. In this sermon based on Hebrews 13:1-8, 12-16, Pastor Eric invites us to receive the goodness of God, a goodness that is never meant just for us, but to flow through us for the sake of the world.

It’s not often that an Old Testament reading for worship brings to mind images of road construction. Today’s first lesson from Isaiah 58:9b-14 announces the ways that God’s people are called to help heal the world around them, by becoming “the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in.” In this sermon, Pastor Paige explores how God calls us to take up these titles today. We bless the world around us when we align ourselves with God’s will and act in ways that pass on his love, the love that we have received through his Son, Jesus.

In Luke 12:49-56, we are probably surprised to hear Jesus say he comes to bring not peace, but division. What does this mean? Isn't he the Prince of Peace? Aren't we called to be peacemakers? The problem is that our world is stuck in all kinds of false peace. This unhealthy stability has to be disrupted by the love and truth of God to make way for real peace. In this sermon, Pastor Eric calls us to trust in Jesus and find, in these words, a source of encouragement and a call to higher integrity and purpose.

Have you every longed for something for years, alternating between disillusionment and hope? In today’s reading from Genesis 18:1-10a, we hear the story of Abraham and Sarah receiving three unknown visitors. The visitors surprised them with a message from the Lord that addressed their deepest longing. In this sermon, Pastor Paige tells why it was a message that they had been waiting to hear for years, and yet had a hard time believing. Pastor Paige also shares how the couple’s encounter with the three visitors guides us to build our lives on God’s faithfulness and pass on God’s blessings to the people in our lives.

The parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37 is probably familiar even to people who never read the Bible. But it is much more than an instruction to take care of others. Through his insight into human nature, Jesus crafts characters and a story that will offer deep transformation to the lawyer trying to test him, and to us. In this sermon, Pastor Eric asks which way our souls are facing, and invites us to let Jesus use us for the healing of our society.

In this sermon on Luke 10:1-11 & 16-20, Pastor Paige shares a story from Reformation’s Vacation Bible School (VBS), which returned this summer after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This VBS story helps listeners imagine what Jesus means in today’s gospel reading when he says, “the kingdom of God has come near to you.” The story Pastor Paige tells also invites us to open our ears and hearts to hear Jesus’ call to serve him and to share the good news of his love for the world.

In Luke 9:51-62, we hear Jesus' strange words, "let the dead bury their own dead." It may sound like he is writing off the rest of the world and telling us to wash our hands of it. But Jesus loves this world passionately. In this sermon, Pastor Eric calls us to see what has a claim on our hearts. Whose voice are we listening to? Who or what gets to shape our values, our thinking, our sense of worth? These are hard questions to navigate. But it can make the difference between us being dragged down into the worst, or being a lifeline to lift others to the best.

Luke 8:26-39, a story of Jesus casting demons out of a man and into a herd of pigs, probably seems incredibly foreign to us. But if we're honest, we know what it's like to struggle with things that are simply beyond our power. We've felt like we aren't in control. In these times, Jesus can set us free. In this sermon, Pastor Eric shows us how our ability to be self-controlled and our capacity to be in healthy relationships can be restored by the love of Jesus.

The book of Revelation has many disturbing images in it. In today's sermon based on Revelation 22:12-21, Pastor Eric encourages to see the image of being "outside the heavenly city" not as a threat against outsiders, but a loving warning to Christians facing pressure to conform to the world around us. God isn't locking anyone in punishment, but the danger exists that we will bring the pain of our sin's consequences on ourselves and others. Still, Jesus reaches out in love, saying, "come home."
