Listening to God’s word, hearing the message of God’s grace, acting on it, and speaking about it: all of these are essential for how we live out our faith. In this sermon, Pastor Paige unpacks the instructions we hear in the book of James (James 1:17-27), to “be doers of the word and not merely hearers.” She also points to Jesus’ conflict with the religious leaders over human traditions to illustrate how grounding our lives in God’s word makes a real difference for how we serve those around us (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23).

What is the purpose of life? Our world tends to think it's some variation of "be happy." But is that really enough? In this sermon, based on Ephesians 5 and John 6, Pastor Eric asks us to consider what it means to live wisely when "the days are evil," and points us towards Jesus as the bread of life who can feed us for a life of purpose and joy.

Why do we come together as a church? When you come to worship, online or on site, what are you hoping for? In today’s sermon based on Ephesians 4:25-5:2 and John 6:35, 41-51, Pastor Eric invites us to think about gathering for God, for ourselves, for each other, and for the world. In that community, we will find gift and challenges that will move us beyond where we could ever go by ourselves.

When we’re on the go, it’s easy to reach for snacks without stopping to think about whether or not that food will actually be good for our bodies or satisfy our hunger. That’s the situation the crowd from today’s reading (John 6:24-35) was in. After Jesus fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread and two fish, the crowd chased after Jesus to get more of that food. But Jesus knew that their true hunger required something better: himself. In this sermon, Pastor Paige asks listeners what they are hungering and thirsting for in their hearts. Jesus, the bread of life, wants to give us so much more than groceries. This sermon prompts us to ask ourselves if we will listen carefully to Jesus’ promises and take in the food that he offers: his presence and love that endure for eternal life.

The stories of Mark 6:1-13 and 2 Corinthians 12:2-10 don’t seem to connect very much. But in the dynamics of the life of faith, they describe the journey out (for the sake of our neighbors) and the journey down (from our own sense of strength into a humble trust in Jesus). In this sermon, Pastor Eric will introduce an image that will probably be coming up a lot in the coming months as he asks, “are we settlers, or are we pioneers?” Listen and be encouraged and challenged!

Today’s two healing stories from Mark 5:21-43 strengthen our faith as we hear about Jesus’ compassion and his power to make people well. In this sermon, Pastor Paige points out how the trust and faith of the ones who approach Jesus make a big difference in how the healings unfold. Noticing Jesus’ tone of voice and his posture of loving curiosity allows this story to reinforce our faith and guide us on our path of healing as well.

On this VBS Sunday, we hear a story of Jesus sleeping in the middle of a storm. On the surface, the miracle in Mark 4:35-41 is that Jesus calms the storm. But, Pastor Eric challenges us to see the real miracle is that he didn't have to in the first place. Do we seek comfort, an absence of storms, or do we seek the faith that Jesus will carry us victorious through the storms? Listen and be challenged and encouraged!

Most of us are just trying to keep up with the day-to-day. But every human being has been created in the image of God with the purpose of making this world more like God intends it to be. Every Christian has been baptized into the saving mission of Jesus. Still, most of us don't feel that compelling sense of purpose and power on a regular basis. In this sermon based on Mark 4:26-34, Pastor Eric looks at two parables of the Kingdom and explores how they help us identify what might be blocking us from connecting with Christ's purposes. Listen and hear how God's Word will cause you to grow into the purposes Jesus has for you!

The Trinity means that our God is the Three-in-One and the One-in-Three. It means that we believe in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. But what difference does that make for our lives? In this sermon, Pastor Paige focuses on two key characteristics of the Trinity that make a big difference: holiness and belonging. She highlights the story of God calling Isaiah to be a prophet (from Isaiah 6:1-8) in order to show how God transforms us and calls us to serve. When you’re finished hearing this sermon, you will have some ideas for how you can carry the Trinity’s holiness and belonging to people in your life.

Every human being is created in the image of God, even though sin obscures that image. In baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit who guides us to become the people God intended us to be: people who, in the power of hope and love, can make an eternal impact on our world. But our world's idea of "you have your truth, I have mine," even though it's supposed to make it easier for us to be individuals and get along, actually makes it harder for us to discover our unique callings. Why? Because truth isn't found primarily deep within us, but by looking at Jesus. In this sermon on John 15-16 and Acts 2, Pastor Eric looks at how the Pentecost story and the gift of the Spirit to "guide us into all truth" helps us grow into our full maturity, without becoming cookie-cutter Christians.

Before he died, rose again, and ascended into heaven, Jesus prayed for his followers and commended them to God’s care. On this Sunday with new members joining Reformation, John 15:9-17 helps us explore what it means to be chosen by Jesus. He explains our Predicament, calls us to a new Purpose, and gives us access to his Power. In this sermon, Pastor Eric challenges us not to settle for the world's definition of success on the one hand, or a domesticated, "nice" faith on the other. Instead, let us enter into the purpose and power that come from Jesus to rescue us from our predicament and launch us on an adventure of faith for the sake of our world.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world,” “I am the bread of life,” and other “I am” statements. These words provide beautiful images of what our crucified and risen Lord came to accomplish for us and for the whole world. In today’s reading from John 15:1-8, Jesus says, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” In this sermon, Pastor Paige dives into the ways this promise fuels our spiritual growth and helps us turn away from toxic vines that try to gain a foothold in our hearts. She invites listeners to stay connected to Jesus as his disciples, and bear fruit together as the body of Christ.

In many ways, we are not a generous society. Our culture pushes us to be defensive, impatient, argumentative, self-centered, and often selfish. How can we resist this pressure? In this sermon, based on 1 John 3:16-24, Pastor Eric challenges us to see the practice of financial generosity as a "rudder" for our souls. If you are concerned that "this is just another time a church wants money," Pastor Eric won't argue, but he will say, don't let that feeling let you off the hook from being generous; find another avenue, one you are comfortable with, to sacrifice financially. Why? Because giving is not only good for the receiver, but for the giver as well.

In First John 3:1-7, the apostle sound like he is saying that sinless perfection is the expectation for Christians. But what if that's not the case? What if he is saying that our sins are outward evidence of deeper, inward, spiritual problems? In this sermon, Pastor Eric encourages us to rest in the truth that in Christ, God has called us his children, and challenges us to consider "where our hearts live." Do you want to deal with superficial problems, or get to the heart of the matter?
